Falcon men's basketball roll to 8th straight

The eighth-ranked UW-River Falls men's basketball team used a 15-1 run late in the first half to break open a close game and roll to its eighth straight win, 72-49, over St. Olaf College in its final nonconference game of the season Friday, Dec. 29, in Eau Claire.

The Falcons will take a record of 9-1 into their WIAC opener Wednesday, Jan. 3, against UW-Stevens Point (6-5). Tip-off is 7 p.m. at Don Page Arena in the Falcon Center.

UWRF and St. Olaf were tied 21-21, with 6 minutes left in the first half when junior Austin Heidecker came off the bench and drained a jumper to give the Falcons the lead for good.

Freshman reserve Jalen Greenlee hit a layup with under a minute remaining to stretch the lead to 10 before senior Devin Buckley drilled a three-pointer to put UWRF up 35-22 at the break. St. Olaf never got any closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Fifteen different Falcons saw action in the win and 12 scored at least two points. Senior Alex Herink of Hudson led the offense with 19 points while senior Brennan Witt recorded a double-double with 15 points and ten rebounds. Greenlee had seven points in eight minutes while sophomore Matt Keller had four steals. UWRF forced 19 St. Olaf turnovers while committing just eight.

UWRF will continue conference play Saturday, Jan. 6, at 11th-ranked UW-Whitewater (9-1) before returning home to host UW-Platteville (9-1) Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m.
