Herink honored by WIAC

Alex HerinkUW-River Falls senior Alex Herink of Hudson was named the WIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week Dec. 18 after registering 24 points and 11 rebounds in a come-from-behind 69-65 victory over Northwestern-St. Paul Dec. 16.

Herink scored 20 points in the second half to lead the comeback. UWRF trailed by 15 points at halftime and 21 points in the second half. His three-point basket with 1:12 left in the contest put the Falcons up five points — their largest lead of the game.

Herink, the reigning WIAC Player of the Year, leads the Falcons in scoring through nine games this season with an average of 16.1 points per game. A 2014 Hudson High School graduate, he is the Raiders' all-time leading scorer with 1,462 career points.

Women win twice out west

The Falcon women's basketball team closed out 2017 with a pair of double-digit wins at the Whittier College Holiday Tournament in Whittier, Ca., Dec. 29-30.

The Falcons topped Dickinson College, 58-45, in Friday's first round before rolling past Emmanuel College, 82-56, Saturday.

UWRF, now 9-2, will take a six-game winning streak into its WIAC opener Wednesday, Jan. 3, at UW-Stevens Point.

The Falcons jumped out to a 17-7 first quarter lead Friday against Dickinson but found themselves trailing 41-39 early in the fourth quarter before Jaycie Gerding hit a three-pointer with 7:45 remaining to put them back up for good. UWRF outscored Dickinson, 16-6 the rest of the way.

Gerding hit 4-of-5 three pointers to lead the Falcons with 12 points while Taylor Karge finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Crystal Pearson came off the bench to contribute 10 points and eight boards.

Saturday against Emmanuel, Brynn Liljander registered 19 points, four assists, three steals and a blocked shot and Pearson had 17 points and seven boards off the bench in an 82-56 victory.

Karge added 12 points and Hayley Rau had six points and eight rebounds as UWRF dominated the boards, 51-28.

After Wednesday's conference opener at Stevens Point, the Falcons will host UW-Whitewater Saturday, Jan. 6, at 3 p.m. at Don Page Arena at Falcon Center.

Falcon skaters return to action

After a three-week holiday break, both the the UWRF men's and women's hockey teams return to action this weekend with the Falcon men hosting a pair of games and the women playing a pair of games at Concordia-Moorhead.

The Falcon men, 4-9-1 on the season, will host Gustavus Adolphus (6-4-3) Friday Jan. 5 and the University of St. Thomas (6-3-1) Saturday, Jan. 6, at 7:05 p.m. both nights at Hunt Arena in the Falcon Center.

The UWRF women, 7-4-1 overall, 2-1-0 in WIAC play, visit Concordia-Moorhead Friday and Saturday before hosting the Korean national team in an exhibition game Sunday, Jan. 7, at 4:05 p.m. at Hunt Arena. Admission is free and all area youth hockey players are invited to bring their skates to take the ice with the teams immediately following the game.
