Men's hockey drops WIAC openers
The Falcon men's hockey team managed just one goal in its first two WIAC games of the season last weekend, falling to UW-Stevens Point, 6-1, Friday Dec. 1 at Hunt Arena before losing to UW-Eau Claire, 4-0, Saturday, Dec. 2 in Eau Claire.
The two losses dropped the Falcons' record to 3-7-1 on the season. They'll host Lawrence University for a pair of games this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 8-9, at 7:05 p.m. each night at Hunt Arena.
Last Friday the Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Peter Karavos 6:14 into the first period before the Pointers scored three goals in each of the final two periods to post a 6-1 win.
Zach Quinn took the loss between the pipes, allowing six goals on 33 shots before being pulled for Michael Hughes with 4:03 remaining. UWSP outshot UWRF, 34-19.
Saturday at Eau Claire, the Blugolds outshot the Falcons 32-21 in a 4-0 victory. Quinn played all 60 minutes and made 28 saves.
Women skaters fall at Superior
The fifth-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team saw its six-game winning streak come to and end with a 3-1 loss at UW-Superior Friday, Dec. 1.
The Falcons dipped to 6-2-1 with the loss, 2-1-0 in the WIAC. They will play a home-and-home series with sixth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus Wednesday, Dec. 6, in St. Peter, Minn., and Saturday, Dec. 9, at 2:05 p.m. at Hunt Arena.
UWRF struck first on a power play goal by Madi Nolan at the 14:57 mark of the first period last Friday at Superior, but the Yellowjackets scored two minutes later to tie the score, then added single goals in the second and third periods, the go-ahead score on a power play, to post the 3-1 win.
Falcon goalie Angie Hall finished with 13 saves as the Falcons outshot the Yellowjackets, 30-16.
Women's hoops snaps two-game skid
After falling to 12th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus, 71-50, Thursday, Nov. 30, in St. Peter, Minn, the UW-River Falls women's basketball team bounced back to defeat Northland College, 66-40, Friday, Dec.1, to 4-2 on the season and snap a two-game losing streak.
UWRF led wire-to-wire with 13 different players scoring at least three points, led by Brynn Liljander with 14. Crystal Pearson was the only other Falcon in double figures with 10 while Tessa Hubbard grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
One night earlier at Gustavus, Taylor Karge scored 14 points and Pearson had 10 points and six rebounds in a 71-50 loss.
UWRF will host Luther College Saturday, Dec. 9 and Concordia College (Minn.) Sunday, Dec. 10, at Page Arena. Tip-off for both games is 3 p.m.
