Football: Wildcats fall at ECM

Eau Claire Memorial needed a 55-yard bomb midway through the fourth quarter to snap a 7-7 tie, then recovered a fumble in the end zone in the final minute, to defeat River Falls, 21-7 in Big River Conference football game at Carson Park Friday, Sept. 15.

The win kept the Old Abes undefeated at 5-0 overall, 3-0 in the BRC, while River Falls slipped to 0-5, 0-3 in conference play.

River Falls limited Eau Claire Memorial to 68 yards in the first half, holding the Old Abes to three first downs while coming up with a fumble recovery and interception. Joey Davis' pick deep in Old Abe territory set up a 9-yard touchdown run by Seth Kohel late in the second quarter to give the Cats a 7-0 halftime lead.

Eau Claire Memorial crossed into River Falls territory for the first time on its opening drive of the second half and finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run by Jack Brown to tie the score.

Old Abe quarterback Keagan Calchera hit Kyle Wilson for a 55-yard touchdown to take its first lead midway through the fourth quarter and the Old Abes got a fumble recovery in the end zone with 33-seconds remaining to make the final 21-7.

Eau Claire Memorial held River Falls to 57 yards and two first downs in the second half.

Kohel led the Wildcat offense with 62 rushing yards on 18 carries and caught 5 passes for 30 yards while quarterback Ryan Flanagan completed 7-of-18 passes for 37 yards.

River Falls will return home to host Chippewa Falls (2-3, 1-2) this Friday, Sept. 22, at David Smith Stadium at Ramer Field. The Cardinals are coming off a 10-7 victory at Superior last week.
