Falcon men clinch WIAC title

In front of nearly 1,000 fans, including 50 former Falcons honored at halftime, on senior night, in the final regular season game ever at the the 58 year-old Karges Center, the seventh-ranked UW-River Falls men's basketball team defeated No. 18 UW-Whitewater, 68-63, to win the 2016-17 WIAC regular season championship.

Junior Alex Herink of Hudson had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists and seniors Garrett Pearson and Grant Erickson scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, as the Falcons clinched their first WIAC championship since 2004.

UWRF, now 21-2 overall, 11-1 in conference play, will wrap up the regular season with a pair of road games, at UW-Eau Claire (17-6, 7-5), Wednesday, Feb. 14, and at UW-Platteville (8-15, 1-11) Saturday, Feb. 18. They earned a bye for the first round of the WIAC Tournament and will host a semifinal game against the lowest remaining seed Thursday, Feb. 23. The WIAC championship game will be played Saturday, Feb. 25, at the home of the highest remaining seed.

The Falcons will move into the new Don Page Arena at the Falcon Center for the 2017-18 season.
