Softball claims share of WIAC title

The UW-River Falls softball team swept a doubleheader from UW-Whitewater Sunday afternoon to give head coach Jody Gabriel her 100th career win and clinch at least a share of the 2011 WIAC regular season championship.

This is the first WIAC title for the Falcons since winning back-to-back titles in 1993-94.

UW-RF is now in sole possession of first place in the WIAC with an 11-3 record with just Tuesday's doubleheader against UW-Oshkosh remaining on its schedule.

The Falcons rallied from behind to win both games Sunday. UW-RF took the first game, 8-7, and the second game, 5-4. Whitewater was ranked No. 7 in this week's NFCA Coaches Poll.

The Falcons scored seven runs in the sixth inning of the opener to erase a 7-1 deficit and post the 8-7 win.

Patty Olson hit a three-run homer to start the rally and the Falcons scored the game-winner on a two-out single by Jessie Bester that plated Amanda Ryder.

The Falcons battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the nightcap to post a 5-4 victory when Ashley Goettl doubled in a pair of runs to cap a three-run fifth inning rally.

Jamie Klein picked up the win on the mound in the opener while Rose Tusa earned the win in the nightcap.
