Herum honored on the diamond

Wildcat senior Marty Herum has been named to the All-State second team and All-Northwest District first team for his play during the 2010 high school baseball season.

Previously Herum was named to the All-Big Rivers Conference team for the fourth straight year. This is the second straight year he has been named All-State and third year All-District.

"To be named four-time all-conference, three-time All-Northwest and two-time All-State is quite a career," Wildcat coach Ryan Bishop said about Herum. "Marty was a very respected player not only in western Wisconsin, but across the state. There isn't a player around that is more worthy of these honors than Marty. Although his baseball skills stand out among the rest, he's as humble a kid as you'll ever meet."

Herum, a four-year starter at shortstop, led the Wildcats in nearly every offensive category this season with a .523 batting average, 45 hits, 27 runs scored, 33 runs batted in, three triples and five home runs. He also tied for the team lead in doubles with seven.

In his four-year career at River Falls, Herum accumulated 128 hits and compiled a four-year batting average of .489.

Herum helped the Wildcats win a WIAA regional championship this season and reach the WIAA sectional championship game, where they lost to Merrill, 8-7, in nine innings last Wednesday.
