Falcon women still perfect
The UW-River Falls women's basketball team improved to 12-0 and moved up two spots to No. 18 in this week's D3hoops.com poll with three wins last week, including a pair of victories at the Surf City Classic in Irvine, Calif., Monday and Tuesday.
The team returned home Saturday and dispatched of St. Scholastica, 70-31.
UW-RF returns to WIAC action Wednesday at home at 6 p.m. against UW-Stout. The Falcons currently sit atop the conference standings with a record of 4-0 while Stout is tied with UW-Whitewater for second at 3-1. The Blue Devils sport an overall record of 7-5.
Last week in sunny California, sophomores Tiffany Gregorich and Alise Holst were both named to the Surf City Classic All-Tournament Team as the Falcons posted a 74-21 win over SUNY-Purchase (N.Y.) Monday night and a 63-59 win over Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) Tuesday.
The Falcons rolled out to a 43-14 lead at the break before holding SUNY-Purchase to just seven points in the second half on their way to the 74-21 win.
Every Falcon played at least nine minutes and scored at least one point. Freshman Brittany Gregorich led the offense with 11 points while sophomore Taylor House finished with nine points and led the team with three blocks. Sophomore Maranda Dohrn was the top rebounder with seven while senior Jenna Hanson led the team with four assists and senior Kelli Hilt came up with five steals.
The Falcons finished the game with 22 steals, 12 blocked shots and 22 assists while doubling up SUNY-Purchase in rebounds, 62-31. They also forced 32 turnovers.
Tuesday against Washington & Jefferson, the Falcons were forced to come from behind to keep their undefeated season intact with a 63-59 victory.
UW-RF trailed by six, 25-19, at halftime and by as many as many as nine early in the second half before taking a one point lead, 41-40, on a basket by Holst with just under nine minutes remaining.
Washington & Jefferson went on a 10-0 run to take an eight point lead, 52-44, with 4:09 remaining, but a pair of three-pointers by Gregorich helped the Falcons pull to within one, 54-53, with 2:06 to play.
After Washington & Jefferson extended its lead to three, a layup and free throw by Gregorich tied the score, 56-56, with 1:32 remaining.
Washington & Jefferson's Ashley Kirkpatrick hit one of two free throws with 1:05 to play before Holst gave the Falcons the lead for good, 58-57, with a layup with just under a minute left.
Gregorich, who scored 10 of her team's final 14 points, finished with 21 points in the win while Holst added 13. House contributed seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Saturday at home against St. Scholastica, the Falcons snapped a 13-13 tie by closing the first half with an 18-2 run to take a 31-15 at the break. UW-RF continued to roll in the second half, outscoring the Saints, 39-16.
Holst and House had 14 points each while junior Tess Lardie contributed 10 points. Dohrn led the Falcons in rebounds with six.
