Cats host volleyball tourney Saturday

Saturday's Big Rivers Conference Volleyball Tournament at River Falls High School will do a lot more than decide a conference champion.

The event, which gets underway at 10 a.m., will also be the Wildcats' Dig For the Cure fundraiser, with donations and money raised from the sale of baked goods and other items going to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation to fight breast cancer.

Members of the Wildcat volleyball team have already placed canisters at a number of area merchants to collect donations, and will be selling everything from individually packaged cookies to bars and trail mix to cook books, hand-knit dishrags, hats and t-shirts at Saturday's tournament. Free will donations will also be accepted.

"So far I am very proud of the girls in the program for their hard work and effort with this event," Wildcat head coach Ashley Schertz said. "The girls have really stepped it up and have done some good things for a cause that is bigger than all of us."

Schertz said all seven BRC teams have been quick to jump on board.

"In fact, the majority of the teams will be wearing their pink on Saturday, and it may perhaps develop into the BRC always being a Dig for the Cure event in the future.

"I am very thankful also for the support of our parents and community members who have also helped to contribute," she added.

Following the BRC tourney, the Cats will open WIAA regional play on Thursday, Oct. 22, against a yet to be determined opponent.
