Eight Fusion earn postseason accolades

The postseason awards have started flooding in for members of the state champion St. Croix Valley Fusion girls' hockey team.

The Fusion led all Big Rivers Conference teams with eight players named to the 2008-09 All-BRC squad selected by the conference coaches. In addition, three Fusion players have been named to the WCA All-State Team while Fusion head coach Matt Cranston was named the WCA Coach of the Year.

Sophomore forward Alice Cranston and senior goaltender Devin Roen were both named to the WCA All-State first team while junior defender Tanis Klingler was selected to the second team.

Cranston, Roen and Klingler also received All-BRC first team honors while senior forward Karlyn Sturtevant, junior forward Lily Cranston and sophomore defender Nikki Plunkett were each named to the All-BRC second team. Sophomore forward Tara Frey and freshman forward Hailey Rock both received honorable mention.

The Fusion posted a record of 23-0-1 this season and became the first undefeated state champion in girls' hockey history.

Alice Cranston led the Fusion with 29 goals and 20 assists for 49 points this season while Roen started every game in goal and posted a goals against average of 0.62 with 13 shutouts.

Klingler finished the regular season with seven goals and 14 assists and went on to set a new state tournament record with five assists in the Fusion's 10-4 victory over Fond du Lac in the title game.

Frey was second on the team in scoring this season with 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points while Lily Cranston was third with nine goals and 19 assists for 28 points. Sturtevant and Rock each had 25 points with Sturtevant finishing with 11 goals and 14 assists and Rock tallying 15 goals and dishing out 10 assists.

Plunkett contributed 10 goals and seven assists from her position on defense.

Mikayla Hogan of Chippewa Falls was named the BRC Player of the Year while Hannah Turnbull of Hayward was selected the WCA Player of the Year.
