Cranston named Coach of the Year
Seven members of the Falcon women's hockey team have been named to the 2009 All-NCHA teams while head coach Joe Cranston was named the league's Coach of the Year.
Forwards Stefanie Schmitz and Jessica Thompson and defender Amanda Ryder were all named to the first team. Forwards Jamie Briski and Abby Sunderman and defender Baily Vikstrom and
goalie Cassi Campbell all earned honorable mention.
Thompson and Campbell both earned honorable mention to the 2008 team.
Schmitz is second on the team with 12 goals and 26 points while Thompson leads the Falcons with 28 points (8 goals, 20 assists). Ryder, one of just two freshman named to the first team, has scored four goals and eight points for the Falcons.
Sunderman is third in scoring for the Falcons with 24 points (14 goals, 10 assists), while Briski is fourth on the team with 22 points (14 goals, 8 assists). Vikstrom has scored one goal and six points for the Falcons.
Campbell has played in 14 games and has a 10-2-2 record, a 1.84 goals against average and a .932 saves percentage. She has recorded three shutouts.
Cranston was named the NCHA Coach of the Year after leading the Falcons to a 17-5-3 overall record and the NCHA regular season title, the second in school history. UW-RF also won the title in 2003.
Cranston has been the only head coach of the Falcons and has a 147-94-20 career record. He was also named the league's Coach of the Year after the 2007 season.
