MADISON - It was a good day for River Falls at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament at the Kohl Center as all three of its wrestlers made the quarterfinals and Logan Cudd went even further.

Cudd survived a scary five-point takedown and nearfall in the last :13 of the third period by Reedsburg's Blake Koch to win 9-6 in the quarterfinals at 125 pounds. Cudd was ahead the whole match but Koch proved hard to control on the mat until the final buzzer.

Cudd will wrestle again at 7 p.m. this evening against Justin Scherkenbach of Muskego (45-3).

Cudd topped Shawano's Jared Kust by a 9-3 decision in the first round. Teammate Tysom Bystrom moved on by decisioning Josh Wipperfurth of Waunakee 7-2 at 189.

But it was the Wildcats' Adam Figi with the most dramatic win of the day. Figi scored four points in the final :20 seconds of his match with Milwaukee Bradley Tech's Vernon Rash to tie the score at 6-6 and used an escape to win in double overtime 7-6.

"Adam didn't panic," River Falls head coach Brady Cudd,"He knew the situation and he executed a nice body block which got him the takedown and nearfall."

But Figi was beaten by Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln's Garrett Schilling 9-4 in the quarterfinals and Bystrom lost 11-3 to Fond du Lac's Justin Birschbach at 189. Both wrestlers will be competing in the consolation round Friday.

"We expected to do well today," Cudd said. "We liked the match-ups we had and the kids came through with their effort."
