Man charged with child sex assault in St. Croix County
A western Wisconsin man faces felony charges for alleged sexual abuse against two children in St. Croix County.
Prosecutors charged Shane A. Kurtz, 37, with first-degree child sexual assault and exposing his genitals to a child. The St. Croix Falls man pleaded not guilty to the charges during a Friday, Feb. 16, arraignment before St. Croix County Circuit Court Judge Scott Needham, who held Kurtz on a $25,000 cash bond.
A criminal complaint filed in the case alleges Kurtz abused two prepubescent children he knew between June and December 2017 in the town of Star Prairie.
According to the complaint:
Allegations came to light on New Year's Eve 2017 when a St. Croix County sheriff's deputy received a complaint from a woman who wanted to pass along "something disturbing."
The woman's stepdaughter told her Kurtz had touched her sexually. A sheriff's investigator interviewed the child, who described how Kurtz had touched her genitals while her mother was away from the house.
The investigator later interviewed another child who said Kurtz had exposed himself to her while they were in a bed at her mother's home. He was nude at the time, the girl reported, who went on to note that Kurtz had told her he felt like "he was in jail and trapped" if he slept in clothes.
She told the investigator she left the room after Kurtz tried hugging her.
