Swimming and diving: Cats third at BRC Meet

Senior captain John Augustin won the conference championship in the 50 yard freestyle and junior captain Logan McLaughlin was runner-up in the 200 free to lead the Wildcat boys swimming and diving team to a third place finish at the Big Rivers Conference Meet Saturday, Feb. 3, in Eau Claire.

Eau Claire Memorial/North won the team title with 694.5 points followed by Hudson with 534 and River Falls with 249. Rice Lake was fourth with 217 and Chippewa Falls was fifth with 212 followed by Superior with 171 and Menomonie with 168.5.

Augustin edged Eau Claire's Jack Merkatoris by five-hundredths of a second to win the 50 freestyle title in 23.32 seconds while Wildcat sophomore Seth Larsen was right behind Merkatoris in third with a time of 23.72 seconds.

McLaughlin was edged by Hudson's Steven Asmus by two-tenths of a second in the 200 freestyle to finish conference runner-up for the second straight year with a time of 1 minute, 51.89 seconds. He also took third in the 100 freestyle in 51.53 seconds.

Augustin, Larsen, Nate Lawrence and McLaughlin teamed up for a second place time of 1:34.96 in the 200 freestyle relay, while Augustin, Larsen, Andrew Richardt and McLaughlin took third in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:32.93. Senior Huck Boles added a third place score of 306.9 in diving.

Next up for the Wildcats is WIAA Sectional action this weekend in Hudson. Sectional diving will take place Friday, Feb. 9, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Hudson Middle School pool with swimming scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m.
