Giving life for a stranger

Issac Anderson donates stem cells to a man he's never met in Ohio.

For over six hours on Aug. 8, Issac Anderson of River Falls was hooked to IVs on both sides  – in one arm where blood was taken out and filtered before being returned via the other arm.

Anderson said the stem-cell donor procedure at the University of Minnesota was painless. He drove himself home when it was over. Anderson registered last February for Be The Match, run by the National Marrow Donor Program.

He hoped to be a donor for Grace Goblirsch of River Falls, who has leukemia. Six months later he wound up being matched with a middle-aged Ohio man with the same disease.

See the Aug. 15 print edition of the River Falls Journal for the complete story.
