Kinnickinnic: Board working on improving safety of bike trails

Safety of the town's bike routes and appropriate signage for bike trails was discussed at last week's Kinnickinnic Town Board meeting. It was reported that an additional 44 posts will be needed for signs. The funding will come out of money appropriated for the Parks and Recreation Committee. The verbiage for the signs remains an issue.

St. Croix County is pushing for signs on the designated roads to include "good bike routes." However, Town Attorney Robert Loberg had advised the Board that this may cause a liability issue. If a bicyclist is hit by a vehicle on a road that is said to be a good bike trail, the town could be held liable.

Concern was expressed by Supervisor Bill Gnatzig that the bike trails established by St. Croix County are now becoming the responsibility of the townships with regard to maintenance and safety. Other Board members questioned whether the Town Board ever approved the County's bike route map.
