The Outdoor Learning Environment Committee of Heartland Montessori School, whose members included parents, staff and Heartland students, recently designed significant enhancements to Heartland’s two acre outdoor area.

Planned changes to the outdoor space at Heartland reflect the emphasis that Montessori education places on exploring, connecting with, and appreciating the natural world.

The additions to the Outdoor Learning Environment will feature natural materials like wood, stone, water, soil and sand. New elements will include: natural hills and rises in the landscape; a stream bed for water play; large boulders and tree sections for climbing; build-yourself wooden playhouses; meditation area; and raised garden beds for flowers and vegetables.

At the Heartland Spring Fundraiser held in April, over $2,500 was raised for the project. Several businesses and local organizations have also donated material towards the project.

The planned improvements are scheduled to be in place by the beginning of the 2014-15 school year.
