Local third graders to receive personal safety education

River Falls Emergency Medical Services (RF EMS) will be presenting an educational safety program to local third grade students during National EMS Week, May 18-24.

This will be the 14th consecutive year that the EMS department has brought the safety program to area kids.

River Falls EMS will present each student with a copy of Personal Safety For Kids, a 138-page handbook that features information about safety in the home, at school, in traffic, on the street, at play, and among strangers. Produced by Gateway Community Safety Net, the program contains lessons and fun exercises that reinforce the rules of self-protection.

Also included is an educational DVD that features animated characters, interactive games, and quizzes. It connects to the Community Safety Net website, where kids can enter online contests and win great prizes.

Each student will also receive a hands-on tour of the local ambulance vehicles and equipment to expose them to procedures that would occur in an emergency situation.

“This is a great program that is received well by students, teachers and parents. I have been part of this program for the entire 14 years and each year it gets better,” said Jeff Rixmann, EMS Director. “Teaching and demonstrating safety to kids is an extremely important tool for injury prevention in the River Falls community.”
