Open house to show off Kinnic Health and Rehab's new look

Kinnic Health and Rehab Admissions and Marketing Director Melissa McArdle stands in one of the facility's newly-remodeled rooms. The room is part of the new Transitional Care Unit, or TCU. The nursing home always offered temporary care, but the new TCU wing will keep all temporary patients together, instead of mixing them in with long term residents.

From the outside, Kinnic Health and Rehab, 1663 E. Division St., doesn’t look very different from its neighbor, the River Falls Area Hospital. But one step inside the building and people will find themselves in a setting that looks a bit more like a living room than a nursing home.

Just off the entrance there is a room with a table and comfortable chairs. Pictures line the walls, and decorative plants sit in the corners on newly-installed wood floors. The room is part of a remodel that Administrator Derrick Maidl said affected all shared areas of the nursing home and one wing of rooms.

“We wanted to make it feel more like a home, too,” Maidl said.

All the nursing home’s common areas were remodeled -- including a new open parlor area near the entrance, the physical therapy room, a community room and a beauty parlor for residents.

One residential wing was converted into a transitional care unit (TCU). Maidl said it will be used for people who need short term care -- often for rehab after injuries or surgeries -- such as hip replacements -- before returning home or to assisted living.

Maidl said he hopes the renovations will increase the services the nurisng home offers.

The community is invited to check out the remodel Thursday, March 13, from 10-11 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.
