Truck crash claims the life of Prairie Farm man

A Prairie Farm, Wis. man is dead following a one-vehicle accident in western Wisconsin on Monday, Aug. 20.

The St. Croix County Sheriff's office responded to a crash at around 3:26 p.m. Monday on County Road G in the Town of Glenwood.

According to the sheriff's department, a 1995 Ford LTL 9000 truck, driven by Steven J. Berends, 29, Prairie Farm, was westbound on County G when it left the roadway.

A witness said the truck went into the south ditch and traveled approximately 100 yards before striking a tree. Berends had to be extricated from the cab of the truck. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Croix County Medical Examiner. It is the ninth traffic fatality of 2012 in St. Croix County.

Berends was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to the sheriff's report.

Assisting at the scene were the Glenwood City Fire Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol. The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff's office.
