Authorities charge mother after fatal fire

The mother of three young children killed in a residential fire in West Allis last week now faces charges in Milwaukee County of three felony counts of child neglect causing death.

Three of Belen's children, 4-year-old twins Adrian and Alexis Colon died in the blaze, along with their 5-year-old brother Nayeli. A fourth-child, a one-year-old boy, was with away with his father at the time. Federal, state, and local investigators are still trying to determine what caused the blaze.

The woman claimed she had asked her sister to babysit while she worked for three hours on the first day of a new job. Belen's sister denied that her sibling asked to babysit. Prosecutors allege she left the children locked in a room alone.

According to some media reports, one of the twin boys had epilepsy and autism and the other had cerebral palsy.

Authorities were already in the process of charging Belen with six misdemeanor counts of child neglect, charges filed in late March. They say the mother entered a craft store with one child but left the others in the car. The twins, then 4 years old, got out of the car and "ran around" the parking lot, nearly getting hit by a vehicle.

Officials said Belen's children were found in need of protective services as of March 28, but the mother was allowed to keep her kids.
