Jan. 3, 2013: UPDATE: Funeral services Tuesday for RF victim

A 25-year-old River Falls woman died Thursday, Jan. 3, as the result of a head-on collision, north of Ellsworth, on State Highway 65.

Katherine R. Kennedy was northbound on STH 65 when she lost control, negotiating a curve, near CTH J. Her car crossed the centerline and struck a southbound Toyota, driven by William G. Platz, 50, River Falls. Kennedy was on her way to work at Helmer Printing.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Department was notified of the accident at 7:34 a.m., according to Investigator Doug Ducklow.

Kennedy was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pierce County Medical Examiner. Platz was transported from the scene with undetermined injuries to River Falls Area Hospital. He was later transferred to Regions Hospital, where a spokesperson said he was in good condition. Platz works as a psychiatrist for Pierce County Department of Human Services.

Ducklow said the roadway was slippery due to light snow during the morning commute. He said Kennedy had her seat belt on and her cell phone off when the accident occurred.

Funeral services for Ms. Kennedy are scheduled at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8 at the River Falls Assembly of God Church, according to the Bakken-Young Funeral Home web site.

The Sheriff's Department was assisted at the scene by Ellsworth Police, Ellsworth Fire and Ambulance and River Falls Ambulance.
