Janesville College ready to help GM workers

For the first time, the University of Wisconsin college in Janesville is going into the General Motors plant to teach a class on basic communication skills.

Carrie Hermanson said it was being planned before GM said it would close the Janesville factory in 2010.

But now, she says the announcement makes it more urgent to get the course up and running.

It's called Inter-personal Communications 101. Hermanson says it will help workers regardless of which careers they'll enter next.

She says it might seem daunting for older employees to go back to school but there are plenty of support services and information to help them weigh their options.

Also, Hermanson says the Rock County campus is creating other courses to help outgoing GM workers brush up on their skills.

A math refresher course is among those in the works.
