Scott Knudson named St. Croix County chief deputy

Named chief deputy

Patrol Captain Scott Knudson has been named chief deputy in the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department. He takes over the position currently held by sheriff-elect John Shilts.

Knudson was named following an interview process of eight candidates by a panel that included members of the county board Thursday (Dec. 9). The panel interviewed six individuals from outside the department in the process.

The county board approved a measure earlier this month to speed up the process for filling the vacancy.

Sheriff Dennis Hillstead retires Jan. 3 after 12 years at the helm.

"I'm relieved the process is over," said Knudson Friday morning. "There has been a lot of hard work but I have been in the right place at the right time throughout my career."

Knudson said with the decision over, he can start setting up plans for Jan. 3.

The 38-year-old Somerset native is single. He graduated from Somerset High School in 1990 and earned law enforcement certification from Chippewa Valley Tech in 1995. He started his career with St. Croix County in January 1996.

The promotion of Knudson leaves an opening for a patrol captain in the department. Shilts said some of the same candidates may be contacted that were involved in the chief deputy interview process.
