FEMA releases half-million for new storm shelter at River Falls' Hoffman Park

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced late Tuesday that it will award the City of River Falls nearly a half-million dollars to help build a storm shelter to protect up to 360 people at the city's Hoffman Park.

The safe room will be centrally located in Hoffman Park to provide shelter area residents, visitors and campers during severe weather events.

FEMA will pay $499,853 or 75 percent of the project’s total cost. Wisconsin Emergency Management and the city of River Falls will both contribute 12.5 percent of the funds, or $83,309 each.

Need for a shelter increased with the recent construction of the First National Bank Field at the park. The new field will open in June, 2014

The park, located off Hwy. 35 at Division Street, also hosts a seasonal campground, picnic shelters and two softball fields which frequently draw hundreds of people.
