Major night fire sweeps through apartment

2 / 2

Just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday, March 10, local firefighters were sent to a blaze of an engulfed rental building owned by the River Falls Housing Authority at 430 Griffey St. Crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from the middle unit of the triplex.

Thirty firefighters used three engines and a ladder truck, and were on the scene for several hours. Toward the end that meant extinguishing various hot spots.

According to Fire Chief Scott Nelson, firefighters knocked down flames to prevent the blaze from spreading to attached units on each side of the triplex.

Nelson reports that major fire damage was contained in the middle apartment unit.

River Falls Police and EMS service assisted. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

The occupants of the fire-damaged unit, a mother and son, were helped by the Red Cross. The adjoining apartment units were vacant and unoccupied when the Sunday night blaze broke out.

Nelson said Monday that the Griffey Street triplex had significant damage. A dollar-loss estimate wasn't available.

No cause was given yet for the fire.
