River Falls' firefighters responded shortly after 3:30 p.m. Thursday to a fire in a harvested corn field along HWY. 35 near Radio Road.

The fire started behind a tractor working in the field and burned about a one-quarter mile swath of land along the east side of the field near the highway. Thick smoke drifted across both HWY. 35 and Radio Road but both roads remained open.

Firefighters doused the fire in less than 20 minutes.

The cause of the fire was unclear. The tractor driver, Mike James of Nelson Farm Supply, was unhurt and there appeared to be no damage to the tractor.

More details will be posted as they become available.
