Erratic driving alerts neighbors

Law-enforcement-radio traffic revealed Thursday morning that residents in the town of Clifton called Pierce County Sheriff's deputies to investigate a man driving a truck erratically through a field between Hwy. 29 and County Rd. F.

Pierce County's Chief Deputy Neil Gulbranson confirmed that officers caught up with the man to learn that he rents a building from a nearby land owner and had slid off the driveway. He panicked trying to drive out of the field.

Gulbranson said the man did not appear to be intoxicated or to have disabilities. The landowners did not press charges, so deputies let the driver go and did not release his name.

Officers learned later that the man had left the area and gone to Prescott, where he filled his tank with gas then drove off without paying for it.
