Old fetus found on campus

Believed to have stored for at least four decades, a preserved fetus was discovered earlier this month in the Ag-Science building at UW-River Falls.

The discovery was made while storage containers were moved around during routine rearranging.

A UW-RF spokesman said the fetus was probably donated anonymously or shipped to the university and may have been used for science class instructional purposes decades ago.

Police and the Pierce County medical examiner were contacted and conducted an investigation. The fetus, believed to be a stillborn, was returned to the university and then sent to a local funeral home for burial.

In decades past, it was common for individuals and hospitals to make such donations to universities and science museums. The practice has long since been discontinued.
