Frey named NAHL all-star
Former Wildcat hockey star Trent Frey has been selected to play in the North America Hockey League's (NAHL) second annual Top Prospects Tournament, the league announced last week.
The event will feature all-star teams from the NAHL's Central, North, South and West divisions competing in a three-game round-robin tournament Jan. 18-20 at the Ice Cube in Ann Arbor, Mich. Over 20 players who took part in last year's Top Prospects Tournament earned scholarships to NCAA Division 1 schools.
Frey was one of four players from the Springfield (Ill.) Junior Blues who were named to the South Division team.
The 6-foot, 185-pound forward is in his first year of junior hockey. He leads the Junior Blues, and is second in the NAHL, with 21 goals this season. His scored Springfield's only goal in a 3-1 loss to the Topeka Roadrunners Saturday night in Topeka, Kan.
A 2008 graduate of River Falls High School, Frey was a three-time All-Big Rivers Conference selection with the Wildcats and a first-team All-State pick his senior season when he led the Cats to within one game of a berth in the state tournament. He finished his career at RFHS with 100 goals and 152 points.
Frey is the son of Tim and Kerrin Frey of River Falls. His younger sister Tara is a sophomore on the St. Croix Valley Fusion girls' hockey team that is currently undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the state.
