Wrestlers third at Northern Badger
Logan Cudd and Sam Johnson each took second in their respective weight classes and seven different Wildcats placed in the top eight to lead the Cats to a third place finish at the 39-team Northern Badger Wrestling Classic a week ago Monday and Tuesday at the high school.
Marshfield won the Division 1 and overall title with 269 points while Division 3 champion Cadott finished second with 245.5. River Falls finished second in Division 1 and third overall with 241 while Chetek/Prairie Farm took the Division 2 title with 204.
Cudd took second at 119 pounds and Johnson was runner-up at 189 while Brad Hetchler placed third at 130. Peter Wolff, at 103 pounds, and Trevor Ross, at 215, each finished fourth and Josh Kinneman was sixth at 171 while Cam Loomis finished eighth at 135.
The Cats will host Menomonie in a Big Rivers Conference dual Thursday at 7 p.m. at the high school.
Johnson was the high scorer for the Cats at last week's Northern Badger, picking up 38 team points. Wrestling at 189 pounds, he won his first two matches with pins in under a minute and won his quarterfinal bout by pinning Woody Reindahl of Clear Lake in 5:34. He posted an 11-4 decision over Jordan Koranda of Marshfield in the semifinals before falling to Sam Filkins of Prescott, 4-2, in the title bout.
Cudd earned 36.5 team points at 119 pounds by winning his first three matches with a technical fall, a pin and a decision. He posted an 11-2 major decision over Kyle Wilson of Neilsville in the semifinals before losing to Bubba Gudis of Bruce/Weyerhauser in the finals, 10-6.
Hetchler used a major decision and two decisions to reach the semifinals at 130 pounds, where he lost a 7-3 decision to Jake Brauns of St. Croix Falls. He came back to pin Damien Luchterhand of Neilsville in 4:38 to take third place and earn 29 team points.
At 215 pounds, Ross cruised through his first three matches with two pins and a major decision before getting pinned by Jack Duerst of Boyceville in 4:23 in the semifinals. Alex Mitchell of Marshfield went on to pin Ross in 2:55 in the third place match to finish with 29 team points.
Wolff won his first three matches a 103 pounds with a pin and two decisions before falling to Chad Bartschenfeld of Amery, 7-0, in the semifinals. He then dropped a 5-1 decision to Ryan Behnke of Bruce/Weyerhauser in the third place match and finished with 26 team points.
Kinneman lost his second round match at 171 but came back to win four straight bouts, three with pins, to reach the fifth place match where he lost to Vinny Brandstadter of Chetek/Prairie Farm, 4-0 and finish with 27 team points.
In his first action of the season after recovering from a broken thumb, Loomis lost his second round match at 135 pounds but bounced back with three straight victories before having to withdraw with an injured shoulder to finish eighth and earn 18 team points.
Tyson Bystrom picked up 13 team points by going 4-4 at 160 pounds and finishing 12th while Austin Johnson picked up 12 points for the Wildcats by going 4-3 at 140 pounds and finishing 11th.
Nick Johnson earned five points while going 2-2 at 285 pounds and Adam Figi picked up four points with a record of 2-2 at 152 pounds while Alex Boddy went 1-2 at 145 pounds and earned 2.5 points and Michael Wolff was 1-2 at 112 pounds and earned a point.
