Wildcat hockey opens season in top ten

The Wildcat hockey team hasn't played a game yet, but it's already considered one of the best teams in the state.

The Cats, who open the season tonight (Thursday) at home against Chippewa Falls, are ranked No. 10 in the Wisconsin Prep Hockey pre-season poll. Madison Edgewood, last year's state runner-up, is No. 1 while defending state champion Eau Claire Memorial is ranked sixth.

The Wildcats finished the 2007-08 season with a record of 18-5-0. The 2008-09 season gets underway at 7 p.m. tonight at Wildcat Centre.

In tonight's other high school action, the boys' swim team opens the season at Eau Claire North while the wrestling team travels to Chippewa Falls. Friday night the Wildcat girls' basketball team begins Big Rivers Conference play at 7:30 p.m. at home against Chippewa Falls.

Over on campus, the UW-River Falls men's hockey team hosts a pair of NCHA contests, Friday against Lake Forest and Saturday against St. Norbert. Game time is 7:05 p.m. both nights at Hunt Arena.

The Falcon basketball teams are also both in action this weekend with a doubleheader against UW-Oshkosh Saturday at Karges Center. The men tip off at 1 p.m. with the women set to hit the court at 3 p.m.
