Rough Thursday for Wildcats
The Wildcat football team dropped a 30-28 decision to Menomonie, the boys' soccer team lost 3-2 to New Richmond in a double-overtime shootout and the Wildcat volleyball team came out on the short end of a 3-0 score at Eau Claire North in high school sports action Thursday.
The soccer and volleyball teams saw their respective seasons come to an end while the football team will begin WIAA playoff action Tuesday night.
At Menomonie, Levi Johnson and Ben Wunrow scored two touchdowns each but the Cats missed a 21-yard field goal as time expired in a 30-28 loss to the Indians.
The Cats end the regular season with a record of 6-3 overall, 4-3 in the Big Rivers Conference. WIAA Level 1 playoff pairings will be released later Friday and will be posted at www.riverfallsjournal.com.
In a WIAA first round soccer playoff game in River Falls, it took two overtimes and six rounds of a shootout before New Richmond escaped with a 3-2 win over the Wildcats.
Lucas Da Costa Cabral scored both River Falls' goals in regulation as the teams played to a 2-2 tie. After two scoreless overtime periods, each team was successful in four of its five shots in the shootout. In the second sudden death shootout round, New Richmond scored on its first attempt and the Wildcats missed, giving the Tigers their first ever playoff victory.
In WIAA volleyball regional semifinal action at Eau Claire North, the top-seeded Huskies ended No. 7 Wildcats' season with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-7 victory.
The Wildcat cross country teams will compete at the WIAA sectional meet Saturday in La Crosse.
