Citizens rally, petition for health-care reform (VIDEO)
Members of Healthy Wisconsin-River Falls and Citizen Action of Wisconsin gathered noon last Thursday in Veterans Park to speak about reasons why they'd gathered between 700-1,000 signatures on a petition they were about to present to the city clerk.
The groups want River Falls to place on the November ballot an advisory referendum designed to grab lawmakers' attention and demand action. The petition asks that the following question be posed to voters:
"Shall the next state legislature enact health care reform legislation by December 31, 2009, that guarantees every Wisconsin resident affordable health care coverage as good as what is provided to state legislators?"
They held signs that said "River Falls needs affordable health care now." Some spoke about their experiences with a system that's failing them. After rallying the group took its petition to City Hall and presented it to the city clerk.
City Clerk Lu Ann Hecht said when she finishes counting and verifying the signatures, the City Council will consider whether to place the question on the voters' November ballot.
