Schachtner defeats Jarchow in special election

10 YEARS AGO, 1998

River Falls Days 1998 provided the usual amount of pomp and circumstance as well as some new and unexpected highlights last weekend. A new feature was the PRCA Rodeo held at the UW-River Falls Rodeo Grounds.

Randi Dahl was crowned Miss River Falls and Miss Congeniality; Noelle Meyer and Stephanie Lehnertz completed her court.

A full line-up of young entertainers performed at the talent show including The Cabaret Kids from the Helmer Dance School, Alyssa Redick performed songs from "Oliver," and Jenny DeRusha sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."

Richard Wendt, 17, and Paul Smith, 16, were the lucky winners of $250 after finding the medallion hidden near Foster Cemetery. They also were a lot itchier after running through a poison ivy patch during their hunt.

Sixteen-year-old Curt DeRusha was the first to cross the finish line for the 2-mile run, and Jon Krupa took top honors in the 10K race. For the women's competition, Laura Albright took the 2-mile, and Ruth Fagerland won the 10K.

20 YEARS AGO, 1988

River Falls Days Royalty were Shari Fjeran, Miss River Falls; Rachael Meier, Second Princess, Katie Jones, Miss Congenialty; and Traci Engel, First Princess.

The River Falls medallion was found by Lynn Lozier of Hammond after the eighth clue was posted. It had been hidden near the demo derby site just south of the UFE plant.

Some of the River Falls Days activities included a dog show at Glen Park. Results were: Best Behaved and Best Costume went to Red, owned by Brent and Laura Ducklow; Funniest went to Scruffy, owned by Amy Parnell; Best Trick and Smallest Dog to Prince, owned by Stacia Goulette; Largest to Max, owned by Kambra Wenzel-Uhls; and Best Looking to Trixie, owned by Julie McDonald.

Demo derby winners were Tony Owen of Beldenville taking first, Joe Owens captured second, and Norman Marek came in third.

The kids fishing contest drew 56 youths with Danny Hinkel winning a reel, Erich Buss a tackle box, and Hillary Mercer a fishing rod.

30 YEARS AGO, 1978

This year Linda Horness was crowned Miss River Falls, with Michelle Lipsky and Cindy Merritt holding the top two spots in her court. The 16 candidates picked Renee Karras as Miss Congeniality, and Cindy Merritt was the winner of the button sales contest.

Barney Klecker, formerly of Ellsworth, won the 10-mile run, making him a two-time champion of the event.

Demo derby winners were Dick Farmer, Randy Deiss and Dan Larson in the features.

Winners of the drawing were Dave Cronk, who won a microwave oven; George Gomill won a radio, and Ruby Richards the portable television.

Street dances were held on the former Lund car lot next to the Lund buildings on South Main Street. Friday night Taurus was set to play with band members Mike Blue, Bob Fuhrman, Brian Abbott, John Foss and Steve Huppert.

On Saturday, Triad was set to entertain with Tom Pechacek, Pete Radd and Casey Kullmann doing the honors.
