Falcon men have rough week
It was a tough week for the UW-River Falls men's basketball team as it dropped two games to two nationally ranked WIAC opponents, 71-40 to No. 12 UW-Stevens Point Wednesday and 71-60 to No. 22 UW-Platteville Saturday.
The Falcons, now 7-12 overall, 1-9 in the WIAC, will travel to UW-Superior (8-11, 4-7) Wednesday, Feb. 6, and UW-Eau Claire (10-10, 4-7) Saturday.
Last Wednesday night at Karges Center against Stevens Point, the Pointers (15-4, 7-3) opened the game with a 9-0 run that lasted over four minutes. The Falcons did not score until the 15:21 mark of the first half when senior forward Scott Kelly hit a three-pointer.
The Falcons could not muster much of anything all night and eventually lost 71-40.
Senior guard Willie Wright and junior guard Jesse Elling finished with seven points each to lead UW-RF while senior guard Courtney Davis and freshman guard Brady Hannigan led the team with five rebounds apiece.
Scott Hoelzel led the Pointers with 12 points.
The match ups didn't get any easier Saturday at Karges Center as Platteville (15-4, 9-2) led from the opening tip on its way to a 71-60 victory.
The Falcons trailed by as many as 19 in the second half. An 8-0 run capped by a Wright free throw cut the gap to 10, 66-56, with 3:40 remaining but that's as close as they could get.
Sophomore guard Deonte Compton led the Falcons with a career high 11 points. Davis added 10 points and five rebounds and sophomore forward Nate Robertson tallied nine points and four rebounds.
Jeff Skemp led the Pioneers with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
