Days Gone By

Past coaches

Correction: In last week's Days Gone By column the photos of past coaches were "flip-flopped" and a clarification is needed. Thanks to Mike Farley for clearing this up for us.

Our own Mayor Don Richards submitted these photos of some past coaches clinics held at the UW-River Falls. He received them via Chris Carisch, former River Falls resident, who forwarded them from Joe Hoy.

In the upper photo, left to right, are UW-Madison football coach Milt Bruhn, River Falls State Teachers College basketball coach George Schlaugenhuaf, University of Minnesota and former Wisconsin State Teachers College basketball coach Ozzie Cowles, Buck Reid, Western Michigan basketball coach; Ivy Williamson, athletic director at UW-Madison; Joe Hoy, former Falcon baseball and assistant football/basketball coach. Hoy left in 1953 to become head basketball coach and later athletic director at Western Michigan University.

The group is in the North Hall coaches' office in June 1949.

Pictured, left to right, in the lower photo are George Schlaugenhauf, Eugene Kleinpell, president of River Falls State Teachers College at the time, Adolph Rupp, University of Kentucky basketball coach, Ray Eliott, University of Illinois football coach, and Joe Hoy. All are standing in front of North Hall in June 1950.
