River Falls Area Hospital CEO David Miller may have been the loser in a friendly competition between the hospital and River Falls Medical Clinic, but the American Cancer Society appears to be the winner.

Miller sported green hair at Friday’s Relay For Life in River Falls as a result of losing a Pot of Gold contest between staff at River Falls Area Hospital, part of Allina Health, and River Falls Medical Clinic.

The Pot of Gold event raised $695.02 for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of River Falls/Pierce County.

It saw employees from both organizations competing to collect the most change. For purposes of the contest, paper money and check donations counting negatively.

The heads of administration at each facility agreed to dye their hair green if their organization lost the challenge.

“I lost, fair and square, and I’m willing to pay up,” said Miller. “If someone asks me why my hair is green, I’m happy to tell them it’s because we raised this money for cancer.

“And if someone gave another significant sum for cancer, I would paint it green again.”

Money raised through the Pot of Gold challenge will be added to funds raised by hospital and clinic employees through a series of events, including a chili cook-off, bake, craft and luminaria sale, and donations to walkers, totaling more than $4,500.

Additionally, Virginia Piper Cancer Institute, part of Allina Health, was one of the major sponsors of the Friday/Saturday Relay for Life held at River Falls High School.
