Turningpoint walk Saturday in Prescott

The Prescott Police Department will host the 2013 Walk to Empower at Freedom Park, 200 Monroe St., Saturday, Oct. 12.

The walk is a fundraiser for Turningpoint, the domestic and sexual violence shelter in River Falls, which serves clients in Pierce and St. Croix counties.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the Great River Road Visitors and Learning Center. There will be a program at 10 a.m., followed by the two-mile walk through the city. The walk begins and ends at Freedom Park. Lunch will be served. Everyone is welcome.

“Although the walk is a fundraiser for Turningpoint, it is also designed to raise community awareness of domestic and sexual violence,” said Chief Mike Bondarenko. “It is particularly symbolic that the walk begins and ends at Freedom Park because it represents victims who have broken the circle of domestic and/or sexual violence and now lead a fear-free life.”

This will be the 25th annual Walk to Empower. The walk originated in River Falls and moved to Prescott four years ago. Last year, more than 250 people participated.
