These artists can draw crowds

Harold Henson stands in Veterans' Park with some of his paintings, holding up a picture of a sun drawn by a local girl, who had stopped by earlier in the day, as a part of the first ever Drawing in the Park event.

Local Artist Harold Henson joined fellow artist Cheryl Maplethorpe Sunday for the first of an event series called “Art in the Park.” Stationed in Veterans Park, Henson showed off some of his paintings, did some public painting and gave kids the chance to make their own artwork.

Henson said the event was first and foremost a way to connect children with art and local artists, and give them something fun to do if they lost interest in the Car Cruze-In on Main Street. Not all kids enjoy antique cars, Henson pointed out, but, he said, all kids enjoy art.

It was also the first time he’s brought his art into the public eye since his hands were bunt in a fire that destroyed his home. Henson said he’s glad to be back, better than ever, and working with kids.
