Rural River Falls woman a big contest winner

The odds were more than 40 million to one, and Peggy Walker beat them.

It was announced Tuesday, July 2, that Walker, who lives with her husband Paul on a family dairy farm just east of River Falls, was a HGTV contest winner in the Smart Home Giveaway.

There were more than 40 million entries for the huge prize -- a $900,000 fully furnished house in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., a 2013 GMC Terrain Denali, plus $100,000.

The new 2,400 square foot, custom-built house includes porches, decks and pool, and is located close to the Atlantic Ocean.

The 62-year-old Walker is a retired special education teacher. She has played the HGTV contest many times before. This time she got lucky.

The Walker dairy farm on County Road M where she lives has been in her husband’s family since 1895.

Walker has fielded questions from the media already and says she’s not ready to pick up and abandon the historic farm – not yet – but she’s thrilled by her miracle win.

The Walkers will visit their new Florida home soon. Film footage of the event will be shown at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, on HGTV.

HGTV is a home-and-lifestyle cable network that reaches almost 99 million households.
