Wrestlers score 5th at Northern Badger, prepare for BRC

Many of the top wrestlers in Wisconsin were on hand at the 27th annual Northern Badger Classic last Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 28-29 at River Falls High School, and the Wildcat wrestling team held its own by finishing 5th in the 12-team Division 1 competition.

Badger greats in Hudson

Former Wildcat and Badger wrestlers, Kevin Black, left, and Trevor Brandvold, joined University of Wisconsin wrestling coach Barry Davis, right, at the inaugural Badger Wrestling Golf Outing, sponsored by the Badger Wrestling Club, at the Hudson Golf Club Saturday. Black is River Falls’ all-time career leader in wins and a four-time state champ who went on to earn All-American honors at the University of Wisconsin and currently owns and operates Victory School of Wrestling in River Falls. Brandvold, who is second on the Wildcat all-time career wins list and was a state champ as a senior, went on to become a two-time All-American and Big Ten champion with the Badgers and stayed with the program this year as an assistant coach.

State wrestlers

Local youth wrestlers Mathew Williamson, age 13, Mitchell Williamson, 11, and Triston Lee, 14, participated in the 2011 Youth State Wrestling Tournament at the Alliant Energy Center in March 25-26. Mathew Williamson wrestled at 185 pounds and went 1-2 and Mitchell Williamson wrestled at 135 pounds and placed fifth while Lee wrestled at 270 pounds and finished fourth. Mathew Williamson and Lee are students at Meyer Middle School while Mitchell Williamson is a student at Rocky Branch Elementary.

University of Wisconsin senior and 2006 River Falls High School graduate Trevor Brandvold was crowned Big 10 Conference champion for the second year in a row at the Big 10 Wrestling Championships March 6 in Evanston, Ill.

After giving up a takedown in the third period of his semifinal match at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament, River Falls wrestler Logan Cudd made sure to tell himself there was only one way he could wrestle to win the match and get to the finals.
