The 2009 gun deer hunting season resulted in one of the lowest harvests in recent history, down nearly 30% from 2008’s deer season. While the hunt was a success in terms of safety and attracting young hunters, with the hunt being the fourth safest in history and nearly 10,000 mentored hunting licenses sold, the lack of success in locating and harvesting deer is troubling.
On Nov. 21 we were deer hunting south of Foster’s End in the Flambeau State Forest in Sawyer County. It was foggy at dawn. As the sun burned through the haze, frost rained from the trees and the temperature got up to about 50 degrees.
Traditions die hard.
Many of the Wisconsin residents who turned out for a public hearing Wednesday night in Ashland said they don’t want to see an end to the state’s traditional nine-day gun deer season that begins the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
