Ask a Hastings resident why they like living here, and chances are you’ll hear something about the small-town feel or strong sense of community. It feels friendly. It feels safe. But one Hastings family knows all too well that Hastings isn’t immune to dangers often associated with bigger cities.
Kyle Mickle, 24, was walking home from a bar when it happened. He had been at a friend’s house earlier in the evening and got dropped off at the bar for a few drinks around midnight Thursday morning, May 17.
A 20-year-old Hastings, Minn., man died Monday afternoon at Regions Hospital in St. Paul as a result of injuries suffered when his car struck a large truck on Hwy. 35, about two miles northwest of Hager City.
Derrick Radke and his fiancée were out for a relaxing weekend on the Mississippi River. They had boated to Prescott from Hastings and had pulled up to shore, where they were going to pitch a tent.
That’s when Radke noticed what he thought was a muskrat swimming toward the shore.
Twenty-three year old men from Prescott and Hastings were transported by ambulance directly to Regions Hospital in St. Paul early Sunday morning following a rollover crash on Hwy. 10, about six miles east of Prescott.
For good friends Randy Johnson and Jim Hunt, Monday morning was supposed to be spent floating on the St. Croix River and catching walleyes.
Instead, the two Farmington men escaped tragedy, then spent the new few hours watching from shore as crews fished their truck and trailer out of the water.
The long wait is almost over.
Construction on a new Highway 61 bridge in Hastings should begin this fall, although some preliminary work such as utilities could begin yet this summer. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) announcement last week that it has awarded the contract to build the new bridge to the Lunda/Ames team for its tied-arch bridge design culminates years of work by city, state and federal officials to replace the existing bridge.
