Knowing there’s a big animal out there that can eat you adds an edge to an outdoor experience. We made plenty of noise hiking through the brushy tree line habitat in Glacier Park, Montana, so that we wouldn’t surprise a grizzly bear. Snorkeling around a coral head in the Caribbean and coming nose to nose with a big barracuda is unnerving, especially when they yawn.
Wisconsin’s network of 42 state trails has been renamed in honor of the legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold.
Gov. Jim Doyle signed a bill which puts the new name on all 1,728 miles of the trail system.
