Jefferson County Sheriff’s officials said 44-year-old Michael Dragan of Oconomowoc died at the scene of an accident that happened around 4:45 p.m. Dec. 29, when he was going down a private driveway and his pickup truck crossed the train tracks and was hit by Amtrak’s Empire Builder.
In a statement issued late Tuesday, members of the Coalition for for the St. Croix River Crossing said a new proposal for a scaled-down, three-lane bridge is a recycled project that has already been rejected by the National Park Service and wouldn't solve the region's transportation bottleneck.
The St. Croix Economic Development Corporation (EDC) unanimously reaffirmed support late last week for the St. Croix River Crossing project at its January 2011 board meeting. The SCEDC joins the St. Croix County Board of Supervisors, which approved a resolution supporting the new bridge early this month.
A small army of Union Pacific rail workers descended on the Roberts area Sunday into Monday, closing two street level crossings and welding new, stronger track into place. The work is part of $4 million worth of improvements occurring this fall between Hudson and Menomonie.
A project to realign and reconstruct part of the intersection of Pierce County Highway E and Highway 10 will be the subject of a June 23 public information meeting by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
