Man shouts from window: Help, she won’t go home

Opening a second-floor window downtown late at night, a male tenant hollered for assistance. His “sort of” girlfriend wouldn’t leave the premises. Officers went up to the apartment in the 100 block of East Maple Street. There, they found a 24-year-old local woman pretending to sleep on a floor mattress.

Old fetus found on campus

Believed to have stored for at least four decades, a preserved fetus was discovered earlier this month in the Ag-Science building at UW-River Falls. The discovery was made while storage containers were moved around during routine rearranging.

Boys burned by fireworks explosion

Boys burned by fireworks explosion Six high school-age male students apparently set off fireworks while riding in a van just outside River Falls. The explosion burned all six, leaving blistering marks on their hands and arms. At least two had to see a doctor. One boy was to see a specialist for second- and third-degree burns to his backside, side and hands.

Several River Falls churches are poised to set up a traveling homeless shelter system starting in April. At a “summit” gathering last Thursday, a group of civic leaders and social service representatives said there’s a growing local homeless problem that needs to be addressed.

School budget cuts would affect classes next year

About $380,000 worth of reductions are being proposed for the 2009-10 school year to cover a projected school district deficit. Each local school will be affected. For example, at Meyer Middle School, all foreign language instruction would be dropped except Spanish. Extracurriculars would also take a hit with assistant coaches being laid off for wrestling and track. Annual fees for students in band would jump from $50 to $75.

Who let the dogs out?

Who let the dogs out? During the past week River Falls police had to deal with three separate reports of roaming dogs. One dog, with no owner, was badly hurt after being struck by a pickup truck on the Hwy. 65/35 bypass. Two others did not end tragically, but, in one instance, some grade school kids brought a loose dog back to their school.

Update: Abandoned, injured dog set to have surgery today

A roaming dog that was struck by a car Monday while crossing the Hwy. 35/65 bypass is scheduled to have surgery today (Friday) at the University of Minnesota small animal hospital. Amazingly, more than $5,000 has been raised by private donors to foot the bill. One man gave $1,000. The dog’s owner has yet to been found.
