Days Gone By

10 YEARS AGO, MARCH 16, 2000 City administrators approved bids that will give area youth a new skateboard park as early as the first weekend in June. American Ramp will construct a 16-foot wide, 4-foot high and 32-foot long wood-framed pipe, two wood-framed bank ramps with two 4-foot rails at Hoffman Park. A 4-foot wide, 16-foot long, wood-framed “fun box” was an added element.

While sorting through her mother’s (Shirley Elliott Kurtz’s) photo collection, Gayle Fesperman came across this photo of the Randall School pupils circa 1900. Randall School was located in the town of River Falls. “Thanks, but no thanks. That’s what local school representatives say to a state-mandated school year start of Sept. 1 or later.” Fortunately, the mandate, pushed by Gov. Tommy Thompson and the tourism lobby, offered an escape clause so school boards can set their own starting times.

On Sept. 30, 1999, painter, poet and musician Brandon “Brandy” Brenna, 28, died from head injuries sustained in a car accident on his way to work in Minnesota. Donated organs from Brandy went to three different people.

Some former hungry college kids may remember Arnie and Roberta Saulsbury. Back in the 1970s he was food director at UW-River Falls and she was also employed by the food service department.
