LaPoint to play soccer at SCSU

St. Cloud State University soccer coach Becky Heiberger-McCabe has announced the signing of nine athletes to letters of intent to attend the university and play soccer for the Huskies beginning in the fall of 2012, including Bailey LaPoint of River Falls.

River Falls High School graduate Katie MacBride, a senior forward at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo., has been named a 2011 Daktronics-NAIA Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Wildcat victory over Mustangs

Wildcat sophomore Ryan Bjornstal (16) beats a Menomonie defender in the second half of the Cats’ 1-0 victory over the Mustangs last Tuesday at the high school. The Cats earned the No. 5 seed in the 16-team WIAA regional which began last week.

Saari named WIAC Player

Austin Saari, 2010 River Falls High School graduate, and son of Tom and Darla Saari, was named WIAC Offensive Player of the Week for men’s soccer at UW-Whitewater recently. He scored the game-winning goal and drew the penalty kick that resulted in the third goal in the Warhawks’ 3-0 win over UW-Superior on Oct. 8.

State tourney bound

The River Falls Wildcat U13C3 girls’ soccer team went undefeated with a record of 6-0, outscoring its opponents 34-5, to qualify for the Minnesota Youth Soccer Fall State Tournament in Rochester next week. WIAA regional soccer pairings announced

Both the River Falls and Hudson boys’ soccer teams will open the playoffs at home when WIAA regional action begins Tuesday, Oct. 11. The Wildcats (13-6-0) earned the No. 5 seed in the 16-team regional and will host No. 12 D.C. Everest (5-11-1) Tuesday at 4 p.m. Hudson (8-11-0) drew the No. 8 seed and will host No. 9 Marshfield (6-10-2) at 7 p.m.

The UW-River Falls soccer team won a pair of home games over the weekend, knocking off 19th-ranked UW-Stevens Point, 2-1, Saturday before rolling over Ripon, 7-1, on Sunday.
