The Wisconsin DNR issued an air-quality advisory for particle pollution – a level orange alert, effective through at least 11 p.m. Thursday, March 11. The warning applies to 54 counties including all of Pierce and St. Croix.March 10, 2010

Wild Side: Color and action in winter shades of gray 
Big flakes of snow came down through the fog Sunday morning. It was the last day of a January thaw. Looking out across the valley, we could see only vague outlines of the trees. Cardinals perched like Christmas ornaments on a red osier dogwood bush next to the bird feeder lent color to the winter scene.

Wild Side: Is it cold enough for you? 
A south wind blew in some 20-degree air last Sunday afternoon. It seemed absolutely balmy after a month that was about 15 degrees colder than average. It was a treat to be outside without my nose instantly freezing up and triggering a sneezing jag.

Pierce County opens snowmobile trails

Snowmobiler crashes, hurt 
A local man driving his snowmobile west of River Falls was thrown from his machine and hurt Saturday night. He was later taken by ambulance to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. St. Croix County Sheriff Dennis Hillstead said the crash victim, Gary Moelter, 53, 444 County Road M, sustained lacerations and complained of head and back pain.
